Isaiah 43:18–19, perhaps more than any other passage, helped me heal after the death of our son, Richard Oral. While I was never prepared for the sheer power of the emotions that would strike what seemed a killer blow to what was left of my soul, I found myself not only at a horrific loss but also in a total emotional mess—a mess in private, a mess in public, and a mess on television.

I had no idea where the rushes of uncontrollable emotions came from and, therefore, not a clue how to manage them. And then—along came Isaiah 43:18–19. I call it the accountability scripture. It left me with no choice but to read it and obey it. After all, it was in the Bible:
